Sure, we may all think we know what foods are good for us and what foods cause weight gain, but sometimes the lines get a little blurred. Foods that are supposed to be “healthy” can actually be loaded with sugar and make you pack on the pounds, despite your best efforts to stick to your diet.

Whether you’re trying to lose 5 pounds or 50, when it comes to dieting, certain foods are off limits if you want to see progress in your waistline. To help you identify which foods just aren’t worth the calories we spoke to Matt Garrell, M.S. Registered Dietician at The Vitamin Shoppe, and some of his answers might really surprise you — say it ain’t so!

1. Juice

“Although many would consider 100% fruit juice to be a healthy addition to a diet, it’s loaded with sugar and doesn’t have the naturally occurring fiber found in the whole fruit,” says Garrell. “We tend to drink more juice than we would eat of the whole fruit, and therefore it shoots up our blood sugar and insulin triggering fat storage. If you drink juice, limit it to no more than 4-8 ounces daily.”
